Biology and Medicine
The application of at the first view uncommon physical technologies in life sciences has induced significant progress in last decades, especially in medicine. Micro system technologies, micro electronics, laser and micro optics as well as new types of materials especially biomaterials and nano technologies have developed to key technologies for medicine.
The analog development is currently observed for plasma physics. Current studies prognoses a strong increase of plasma applications in medical device technology, in biotechnology and pharmacy.

This development finds its counterpart in the establishment of the independent area of research "Plasma for Biology and Medicine" in the INP.
In the two main fields of research plasma decontamination and experimental plasma medicine the work is focused on fundamental research of the mechanism of the interaction between plasma and living cells and tissue. Furthermore, the results of the fundamental research are examined concerning their potential for realization and if required transferred to application. This concerns on the one side the plasma based biological decontamination/sterilization of sensitive materials and devices and on the other side the therapeutically application of atmospheric pressure plasmas in medicine. The INP Greifswald turns to account the concentration of scientific competences and knowledge in the areas of plasma research and life sciences located in the scientific center Greifswald to carry out in cooperation with the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-university trendsetting and innovative research and development on this high innovative area.
