Plasma Wound Healing

The research group "Plasma wound healing" deals with the question: Is the wound promoting effect of cold plasmas dependent on the aetiology of the wounds, the metabolism or also the spectrum of microbiological colonisation? With the previous research of the ZIK plasmatis and the application-oriented research at the Kompetenzzentrum Diabetes Karlsburg, it could be proven that cold plasmas achieve a selective stimulation of human cells and tissue when applied in a targeted manner. In the future, further research will be conducted in this field on individual plasma treatment - adapted to the respective wound situation. The research goal of this Plasma Wound Healing research group is to deepen and expand the basic principles of plasma-based wound healing by finding differences between skin cells and the microorganisms present in chronic wounds. Molecular differences in radical defence, metabolism and cell repair between human skin cells and the immune system or the microorganisms present in the wound are to be identified. Another topic is regenerative medicine and the use of autologous stem cells or progenitor cells to positively support wound healing.

For these investigations, close cooperation is being maintained with the Karlsburg Clinic, as well as the Department of Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery of the University Medical Centre Greifswald and other wound centres. The aim is to develop a plasma treatment individually tailored to the patient or the wound in order to further optimise wound healing with the help of cold plasmas.
In this context, work is also increasingly being done in the field of standardisation in order to focus on safety for users and patients, but also to prove the effectiveness of the plasma sources under standardised conditions. For this purpose, a QM system will be established at the Kompetenzzentrum Diabetes Karlsburg in the coming years, which will also be applied to the development of other medical products in the future.
