What is HiPowAR?

Becoming a leading actor on fast expanding global markets for sustainable technologies and services is imperative for the European economy and the energy sectors in particular.

Therefore, the overall aim of HiPowAR is the development of a breakthrough technology in the direct energy conversion from renewable NH3 fuel to power.

The proposed conversion approach combines elements and process details already known from Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SO), internal combustion engines (ICE), gas turbines (GT) and steam power Rankine Cycles (SRC). However, HiPowAR does not entail well-known tack-on approaches such as a combined-cycle plant or a SOFC coupled to a gas turbine. Instead, it will focus on a fundamentally novel approach realized within a single device.

The HiPowAR energy conversion device consists mainly of a pressurized membrane reactor coupled to a gas expander. Liquid ammonia will be combusted internally at high pressure using ceramic MIEC membranes (Mixed Ionic Electronic Conductor) permeable for oxygen - O2 - only. The extreme high temperature of the product gas will be cooled down using water or steam captured from the exhaust gas.

The major advantages comprise a higher efficiency compared to even the best SOFC, lower investment costs and a steeper cost decrease for larger systems. Moreover, it will further promote the acceptance of ammonia as an alternative, synthetic fuel without CO2 emissions.

The HiPowAR project employs six specific aims to develop a breakthrough technology in the direct energy conversion from NH3 fuel to power, thereby ensuring sustainable and zero-carbon emission energy production.

  • Modelling and simulation of system key components and optimization of the system layout
  • Assessment of the economic feasibility and competitiveness
  • Assessment of the environmental impact
  • Disseminate and exploit HiPowAR outcomes

German project partners are the coordinating Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology, Fraunhofer IKTS and the Center for Fuel Cell Technology, which are already working together in the WIR consortium CampFire. Companies and research institutions from Sweden, Italy and the Czech Republic are also involved.
