PlasMark

A multidisciplinary consortium of physicists, biochemists, biologists, and pharmacists is researching the effects of microplastics in the body. October 2020 will see the launch of the PlasMark project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research with €4.5 million. The project is developing methods for the label-free diagnosis of plastic particles in the context of the widespread contamination of the environment and food chains with micro- and nanoplastics, and is investigating the biological consequences in eukaryotic cells. The joint project thus promotes research at three Centers for Innovation Competence (ZIK) in the new federal states: ZIK plasmatis at the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology Greifswald (INP), ZIK HIKE at the University Medical Center and University of Greifswald, and ZIK innoFSPEC at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam (AIP). The spokesperson for the consortium is Dr. Kristian Wende of the INP.
