Research and experimental development of a technical solution for automated wound edge detection with integration of non-invasive wound depth measurement

The aim of this project is to develop a product and process for innovative, fully automated and non-invasive, universally applicable digital and AI-supported wound depth measurement, as well as automated wound edge detection and germ detection using digital photography, depth sensors and a new modular camera and wound documentation system, thereby improving the assessment of the regeneration of chronic and complicated wounds. In addition to a novel automated wound depth measurement – which also allows the wound volume to be determined – the type of wound and the wound area (sharpness or blurring of the wound edges) are also to be automatically recorded and displayed as predictive parameters of regeneration.

The aim is to achieve fully automated clinical and outpatient wound documentation (editing remains possible), whereby the newly developed camera and the automatic wound documentation measurement system are to be integrated into the Xototec camera and documentation system and cover the most important clinical interfaces in well-known IT systems (including SAP, Orbis, Medico, etc.). Overall, the project will develop hardware and associated software, which will be produced in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and used internationally.

Overall, the innovative developments will also significantly simplify the general transferability of data across sectors between systems and enable this to be done sustainably thanks to the complete elimination of paper, which also has positive environmental benefits. The main objective of the sub-project at KDK (TBI-1-036-W-013) is the research and experimental development of a measuring module for automated and non-invasive wound depth measurement, including the implementation of sensors and programming for automated wound edge detection.
