Target-H

Innovative therapies, smart diagnostics, and predictive oxidative signaling patterns using the example of skin cancer

Project duration: April 1, 2025 – June 30, 2029

The Target-H state excellence initiative is a joint project in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that aims to combine advanced therapeutic approaches and smart non-invasive diagnostic technologies with an AI-based clinical decision support system in order to optimize the treatment of skin cancer.
As part of the project, an innovative cold plasma technology for the treatment of skin cancer is to be designed and optimized at the INP (project partner 3). In addition to a detailed physicochemical characterization of the new cold plasma source, the focus is also on the further development of translational test models. In the future, these should enable an improved understanding of oncological-immunological aspects of cold plasma treatment on skin cancer cells as well as molecular mechanisms. In particular, the focus will be on the expansion of preclinical three-dimensional skin cancer models such as the in ovo egg model, as these reflect many aspects of tumor pathophysiology (e.g., vascularization, nerve formation, matrix formation) and can thus improve the relevance of future research in dermato-oncology.

Prof. Dr. Sander Bekeschus is co-spokesperson for the research consortium, which is funded with €5 million.
