PlasmaPlusCorona (PPC)
The joint project “PlasmaplusCorona – Plasma-based disinfection of the mouth and nasopharynx to reduce the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals” aims to limit the transmission of coronavirus infection right at the onset of the disease. The virus multiplies particularly rapidly in the mouth and throat. This is also where the risk of infection through coughing, speaking, and breathing is greatest. If the viral load in this area can be reduced, the risk of infection and the spread of the virus in the body are also reduced. The “PlasmaplusCorona” project, funded with over EUR 2.2 million by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), is dedicated to investigating whether cold plasma can also be used to combat viruses. This is being tested using new plasma source approaches on various model viruses, including murine coronaviruses at the INP. The spokesperson for the consortium is Prof. Dr. Thomas von Woedtke.
