CAMPFIRE

The CAMPFIRE alliance in the North-East region is pursuing the development of a new field of innovation for the decentralised production of ammonia from renewable energies and its use as an innovative energy source for emission-free maritime mobility. The North-East region represents a geographical concentration of companies, institutions, research facilities and associations in the Rostock, Stralsund, Greifswald and Uckermark areas that are active in the energy and maritime sectors. The scientific expertise in thin-film technologies and high-performance catalysts available in the North-East region forms the technical and content-related starting point for the strategic project. The integration of innovative electroceramic thin films into energy systems enables resource-saving direct energy conversion processes for an ammonia economy. They offer the opportunity for structural change through technological leadership in products that are experiencing rapidly growing demand due to climate policy objectives.

The CAMPFIRE alliance currently consists of over 60 mainly regional, but also supra-regional partners. The innovation partners have the natural science, engineering, legal, economic and climate policy expertise to develop electroceramic thin films and energy conversion systems and embed them in a market shaped by climate policy goals. Companies already active in the energy market, a large-scale industrial production facility for ammonia-based fertilisers and companies in the maritime industry are participating in the innovation alliance. Small and medium-sized enterprises in the supply and service industry for the maritime sector and the wind power industry in particular are to develop unique selling points through their active participation in regional value chains and strengthen their competitiveness within the framework of sustainable structural change. The impact of the new field of innovation on cooperation, supplier and customer networks will bring about a sustainable change in corporate structure and infrastructure. From the outset, the legal framework for the applications will be considered and compatible business models will be developed. After five years, the first regional utilisation chain for green ammonia will be in place. Innovative concepts and a demonstration drive for maritime mobility based on ammonia will be available.
